About Mizmaar

5 questions

What is Mizmaar Institute?

Mizmaar Institute is a Chicago-area 501(c)(3) not-for-profit dedicated to Qur'anic memorization, authentic recitation, and community service. We teach the Qur'an the way it has always been taught: through direct, one-on-one mentorship with a qualified teacher.

In Arabic, a mizmar is a wind instrument, something like a flute. The name comes from the Hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ praised Abu Musa al-Ash'ari's recitation, saying he had been given "a mizmar from among the mazamir of the family of Dawud." It is the standard we aim for: a recitation that moves hearts.

Mizmaar Institute was founded by Shaykh Hassan Ali Kasi, a Qari Al-Mujaaz, Imam, and internationally recognized Qur'anic reciter. He holds an Ijazah through a Sanad of 29 narrators back to the Prophet ﷺ. Read his full biography.

A Sanad is the chain of teachers through which the Qur'an has been passed down, voice to voice, from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to the present day. Our founder's Sanad has just 29 narrators, regarded as one of the most direct chains of our time. At Mizmaar, every student learns within that chain.

The Qur'an was never preserved through recordings. It was preserved through a living chain of teachers. A video or audio file cannot correct a student's mistake in real time or pass on direct authorization. Only a qualified teacher, sitting with a student, can do that.

Programs & Enrollment

4 questions

We offer three programs: the Full-Time Hifz Program, the Ijazah & Sanad Program, and the After-School Program. See all programs.

Enrolling takes four steps: choose the program that fits your student's goals and schedule, apply through our enrollment page, our team contacts you to discuss your student and next steps, and your student joins the upcoming academic term.

It depends on your student's goals and schedule. Full-Time Hifz is for students ready to memorize the entire Qur'an, Ijazah & Sanad is for students who have completed Hifz, and the After-School Program fits students attending regular school. Compare them side by side, or ask us.
